Yellow lion with sandal (2019) – hand-pulled screen print by John Murray
John Murray (b. 1973) tackles both abstract and representational work with equal vigour, the results equally lauded. These seemingly disparate genres are rooted in his gravitation towards ambiguity – an uncertainty that began as a manifestation of frustration, but became a source of meaning, as he explains: “…my paintings are conceptually elusive and rather enjoy functioning in a sort of liminal space”. Working primarily in oil on canvas, his process is one of action and reaction, of both intuitive and conscious mark-making, that accumulates through layers and residues to create fragmented compositions of emotive depth and tension. His figurative work usually comprises juxtaposed imagery referencing photographs and found objects – some politically loaded, others apparently trivial – further evoking the uncertain overlaps between a number of contrasting states.
To date, Murray has held 11 solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions both locally and abroad, as well as workshops and residencies in New York City, Amsterdam, London and Cape Town. Additionally, he has created two large-scale, site-specific mural commissions, one of which is located in the USA.
