Secrets (2017) – hand-pulled screen print by Sanell Aggenbach
Acclaimed artist Sanell Aggenbach (b. 1975) employs a range of mediums that, while diverse in discipline, share a strong thematic undercurrent. Ideas of transience, nostalgia, belonging and cultural identity pervade much of her work, with ethereal subjects and dissolving hues evoking ambiguity and a sense of deep reflection. With masterful layering and a restrained palette, Aggenbach combines opposites of form and concept: Historical and private narratives, anonymity and intimacy, presence and absence, anatomy and memory, tangible and intangible, black and white – all intersect and intermingle, subtly subverting any sense of certainty or notion of absolutes. Aggenbach’s many achievements include the 2009 Ampersand Fellowship in New York, as well as awards and participation in international exhibitions and residencies. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections both locally and abroad.
Her collaboration with 50ty/50ty began with tusche on graphic paper, which was then overlaid as six different exposures to create the final image – a technique which strangely enhanced both the depth and transience of the image.
