After-party (2016) – hand-pulled screen print by Brett Murray
Brett Murray is known for his acerbic bronze sculptures, photographs, works on paper, paintings, and public art installations, which lambaste politicians, corruption, and abuses of power in his native South Africa and beyond. Satire in all of its forms is key to his approach, as he explains: “Within satire, there is a range [of forms] from the one-liner to something more open-ended, more metaphorical, where the humour is more layered. I try and work within all of these.”
The video work Triumph from his last solo show titled Again Again (2015, Goodman Gallery) was included in the South African Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.
Murray’s work is housed in many esteemed South African and international public collections. These include: Iziko South African National Gallery, Red Bull (Austria), the Collection of Mikki and Stanley Weithorn (USA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (USA).
