February 2017 release: Notes on a stoney heart by Gitte Maria Möller

Gitte Maria Möller (b. 1991) graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art (Cape Town) in 2015 with the Judy Steinberg Painting Prize in hand. She has since participated in numerous exhibitions, including a solo showing at the Turbine Art Fair (Johannesburg) in 2016 and the I Never Read Art Book Fair in Basel, Switzerland in the same year.

Möller embraces a range of painterly mediums – oil paintings, acetate collages and pixellated MS Paint creations – in her exploration of the symbolic and mysterious aspects of art making. With fragmented imagery drawn from ancient mythology, manuscripts, prayer paintings, motivational images and functional graphics, she populates worlds of magic realism with exaggerated and juxtaposed signs, symbols and archetypes. Her complex, eclectic artworks offer a distracted meditation on the world around her – a world interpolated by empathy and apathy, freedom and vulnerability and the struggle between good and evil.
